So, what is a CSA anyway? Here is the 101.

What is a CSA? What is a FARM SHARE?

“CSA” stands for “community supported agriculture” though this definition is quite broad. In some There are many ways to support community agriculture i.e. shopping at farmer’s markets, local markets or directly with nearby farmers. “CSA” has become synonymous with a once-a-week or biweekly box full of local fruits and veggies that are in season you pick up at the farm or is delivered to your door. With some farms, members must work off some of their shares, weeding and harvesting produce. Often, members simply get a share of what is grown on the farm and in season. (Of course, not with mine!) Member’s diets are regularly filled with local, superior quality and flavor food. If you have ever compared a hothouse tomato to a warm tomato, grown in soil, you know what I am talking about. If you don’t it is time to join VIBRANT EARTH GARDENS!

What makes this better than the grocery store?

Food that only travels 20 minutes from the farm to your home will indubitably fresher than what has come all the way from Mexico, traveling further than me this year! Hand harvesting, only harvesting what I will sell, and only giving you what you want to eat keeps it so fresh. I use recycled plastic mesh bags. They are washable and reusable, creating zero waste. Food is shared in a large washable tote, again, with zero waste.

What makes VIBRANT EARTH GARDENS farm share the one for me?

Organic tastes better. Heirloom seeds produce lower yields, yet are more flavorful, so to me, it is worth the added cost! The circle of life... with hard work and the right ingredients, it is possible! A grand garden set right off a busy road in Denver, Colorado is the home for a sustainable, holistic farm tended by entirely women. The garden feeds the people. The flowers grace your homes, the bees pollinate with happiness. The garden feeds the animals, not one scrap wasted, What garden trimmings don't go to the chickens and goats goes to compost, which will fortify the garden next year. Mother nature guides the relationships between plants, soil, livestock, water & people, creating an efficient, healthy farm focused on BOTH the outcome of delicious products, and the health of the land, animals, environment & community.

You get the option for flowers, prepared items, and a curated selection of local products, some from my chef’s kitchen. Using re-usable packaging eliminates waste and that is important to me. I’ve got a chef’s palette and I’ve chosen seeds for fun, healthy, delicious eating.

What does menu style or a la carte mean?

YOU GET WHAT YOU LOVE AND WANT TO EAT! It all begins with you telling me what you enjoy eating. Google allows clear and quick communication. I will update you each week with what I am harvesting. You let me know what sounds good. I’ll do my best to accommodate all requests. Each harvest is picked just for you. Each member’s box is customized. Traditional CSA membership involves zero member choice or input.

What does Holistic Farm mean?

  • Holistic Management increases water infiltration & retention of moisture in the soil by as much as 800%.

  • Holistic Management producers have been able to increase organic matter by as much as 300%, bringing more carbon out of the atmosphere and into the soil to feed life.

  • Holistic Management producers create more food and fiber from the sun’s energy by increasing land productivity.

  • Holistic Management producers have improved wildlife habitat and increased ground cover by as much as 100%, healing the environment and reducing erosion.

Is the food from VIBRANT EARTH GARDENS organic?

No. And yes. To be considered officially “organic”, food must be certified organic, which can be costly and time consuming. I grow on pesticide free land, using organic by nature, no till, sustainable, regenerative soil building practices.

Where and when are FARM SHARE : CSA pickups? Do you offer delivery?

CSA pickups will be on Sunday afternoons at the farm. Delivery is available for $10 flat fee for each delivery. (Within 10 mile range of farm or farmstand).

FARM LOCATION TBD

What happens if I can’t take a delivery… I don’t need the food or I am going out of town??

I partner with many local food banks and farmers who are serving food desert communities, many of them people of color. I suggest donating your unwanted or unused produce at the peak of freshness, to feed those in our community. For every purchased share you donate, I will match your donation. If you would like to have a friend or family member pick up your share in your spot, simply let me know via the google doc each week.

The BUZZ on VIBRANT EARTH GARDENS

“Oh, Jenna, I am so proud of you. Your tomatoes are the best.”

— my mom, Veralyn Johansen

“The decisions you make are a choice of values that reflect your life in every way.” “It is a fundamental fact that no cook, however creative and capable, can produce a dish of a quality any higher than that of its raw ingredients.”

— Alice Waters

“You don’t have to cook fancy or complicated masterpieces - just good food from fresh ingredients.”

— Julia Child

“Personally, I have been very impressed by the slow food movement. It is about celebrating the culture of food, of sharing the extraordinary knowledge, developed over millennia, of the traditions involved with quality food production, of the sheer joy and pleasure of consuming food together. Especially within the context of family life, this has to be one of the highest forms of cultural activity.”

— Prince Charles
